Danger Days--Part 71

Kobra Kid—Mikey:

“No, Specter!” I watch as she goes flying back onto the hood of the car behind us.
Specter’s about to make a jump for it but gets caught struggles against the grip of the Dracs as they try to pull her in, but she stops once she realizes she’s dangling out the window of a fast moving car.
“Ghoul, pull us back, we gotta get Specter!” I say as I pull my head back in the car.
“What the hell do ya think I’m tryin’ to do here—deliver a freakin’ pizza?!” he shouts back at me as he backs the Trans up next to the Dracs’.
I look back out the window to see Specter shooting off her gun, killing all but the driver in the car—damn, I’ve gotta remember not to mess with that kid. I’m about to reach out for Specter, but then Show Pony pulls me back in.
“What the f—”
“Hang on!” Frank yells out, and suddenly we veer off to the left and a giant canyon wall cuts off my last sight of Specter.
“No, we’ve gotta go back!” I can’t lose her now, I gotta keep her safe for Gerard’s sake.
“Working on—oh shit!” Frank yells out just as the first rocks start falling down on us.
“Damn it! They’re driving us in and blocking off the exit!” the second I here Ray say that I look back and to my horror see that he’s right.
“Wait—this is the shortcut canyon to Joe’s,” Show yells out.
“How is that—” I’m about to lose it before Frank cuts me off.
“We won’t reach her in time—they took her down the dead-end and there’s probably a copper waiting at the end!” he yells slamming his hand on the wheel, but then veering the car again as a boulder comes down on us.
It’s like a freakin’ earthquake with all these rocks falling around us—god it reminds me of the Apocalypse…all we need now is those fires. After what seems like a freakin’ eternity, we pull back out into the open desert. I jump out of the car and start shooting at the top of the canyon, knowing they’re up there trying to keep us from saving her. I would’ve kept shooting at the unseen targets if Ray hadn’t come up behind me and started pulling me back to the car.
“Get the hell of me!” I scream pulling against his grip.
“Forget it Kobra, they only wanna keep us distracted!” he says tossing me down to the ground and grabbing my gun outta my hand as I go down. “Party wants us to protect that kid,” he says, looking at me with disappointment, “And the only way we’re gonna get her back is if we continue on and meet up with Dr. D and Cherri at Joe’s.”
As much I hate to admit it, Ray’s right—it’s always the older ones that have to be so damn right about this crap. He sighs and holds out his hand to help me up, but I slap it away in my anger and frustration. I feel like the worst uncle/brother now because I broke my unspoken promise I made when I pulled Specter outta that collapsing building—that’d protect her no matter what now that Gerard was…
“Mikey, listen,” Frank pulls me back and away from the horrible thoughts when he speaks up. I look over and see that his face shows worry for once, “I know how bad you probably feel right now, Party’s—gone, and Specter’s been taken by the BLI again…”
“Not helping!” I yell as I make my way for the car.
I would’ve jumped in the driver’s seat and started heading back to catch up with those Drac dogs, but Frank grabs my arm and pulls me back to face him.
“Jesus Christ—you’re just like Gee!” he yells, but then his face softens back to the worry, “Look, we all feel bad about Gee, and we all want to get the kid back just as bad you do—but we need to stay together if we wanna get anywhere in finding her.”
God, even when I’m not the youngest, people still treat me like I am…but with good reason sometimes.
I look back at the sealed of canyon, knowing I can’t go back to save Specter in time, “Fine, we need to hurry then, and—oh shit! We’ve gotta tell D what happened, he’s gonna have a heart attack!” I’m about ready to pull my hair out now.
“Kobra, calm down before you have a heart attack,” Show calls out.
“I think I’m beyond that,” I mutter as I climb into the driver’s seat, “C’mon, we need to get to Joe’s and start figuring out how we’re gonna get Specter back.”
The others climb in and just as I start the car back up, Dr. D picks now of all times to buzz in.
“Dr. Death calling out to Zone Specter and the Fabulous Killjoys,” he sounds so happy, like everything in this world is good and normal like it was before BLI.
“He’s not gonna think we’re so fabulous after this,” Frank mutters.
I grab the mic off the dashboard and hesitate before I answer, “Kobra Kid to Dr. D, we took the canyon near the old paint shack—we should be at Joe’s in about an hour.”
“Good to hear Kobra, Cherri and I should be there in another day or two,” god, the excitement in his voice is killing me! D cuts back in then, sounding like the happiest man on Earth, “Where’s Specter? I’d like to talk to her for a sec.”
I can’t do it. I start to shake suddenly as everything sinks in finally—I’ve lost my brother and my niece to BLI, the only family I ever had, now gone.
“Kobra, are you still there?” D said, sounding worried.
“Jesus, Mikey you’re gonna kill us!” Ray yelled, then Frank reached his foot over and slammed it on the brakes.
That’s when I finally lose it—the first time in so long, that when I feel the first tears fall I almost think it’s sweat.
Frank takes the mic outta my hands and tosses it back to Ray, then he does the most unexpected thing—he hugs me.
“It’s alright Mikes, everything’s gonna be alright,” he starts whispering all these things that I know aren’t true, but it still helps I guess cause I start to feel better.
“Dr. D, this is Jet Star, I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news,” I hear Ray’s sad voice then, preparing to tell D the worst.
“Jet what happened?” now he’s really worried, this can only go one way now.
“We got ambushed at the paint shack, Party sacrificed himself to get the rest of out of there, but they kept coming after us, and…” Ray’s always been the one to consider what he says, and now’s not the greatest of times for him to hesitate.
D sounds frightened with his next words, “No, Jet please tell me you’re not gonna tell me…”
That’s when I explode, “D I’m sorry, they got Specter! I did all I could but I just couldn’t save her in time!” I barely manage to choke out a whisper, “I’m so sorry D.”
There’s the sound of loud static from the speakers, which can only mean that D dropped the mic. Oh god, he’s having a heart attack I just know it!
There’s the familiar sound of brakes screeching through the speakers, and the faint worried sounds of someone trying to talk to D.
“D, oh god, please don’t cry! We’ll find her D, if it’s the last thing we do!”
“Cherri Cola, is that you?” Show says.
“Yeah, none of us are taking this well,” Cherri Cola? Lynzie’s old friend from the Danger Days?
“Look, we’re still heading for Joe’s, we need to start planning are next move on rescuing Specter,” Show says.
“I’ll be there as soon as I can—so expect us by tomorrow,” Cherri says quickly, “I gotta go now guys, I’ll see you soon.”
“See ya Cherri,” Show says before settling into his seat again.
“Hey, Mikes, you alright now?” I look up to see Ray looking at me concerned.
“Yeah I’m fine, just…you know,” I mumble as I rest my head on Frank, who’s still holding on to me from my break-down.
“Maybe I should drive then,” Ray says, already opening the door and getting out of the car.
I sigh as I realize he’s probably right. Frank lets go of me and I open the car door to get out. Ray gives me a pat on the back as I stand up before he takes my place in the driver’s seat. I get into the back with Show and buckle up, and lay back and close my eyes as Ray starts to drive. Now I know why Specter was so determined to find her sister before—a promise like this kills you inside.
