Danger Days--Part 25

“Would one of you please tell me what you’re talking about,” Show cuts through my thoughts as I realize how we can escape. I turn so that my back is to the door, and I’m facing the brackets that connect us to the wall, Jen's the closest so I go for her chains first.
“Pull your chains tight Dune,” I say as I pull my legs in. She turns so she’s facing the wall too, then she braces her legs against the wall and pulls her chains tight. I take a deep breathe and slam my heels down hard against the bracket, a groaning noise comes from the chains when I hit them, but they don’t give way. I pull my legs in again, and push them down again harder, there’s a sharp clinking sound, then Jen falls backwards.
“You okay Dune?” I say looking over to her.
“Yeah, but how do I get the manacles off?” she replies sitting up, and holding up her connected wrists. Dang I forgot about those.
“Gimme a minute,” I say turning back to my own set. I pull them off to the right, then start hammering away at the bracket. Once I’ve got mine out, I pull myself up to stand and walk over to Jen. She starts to get up but I stop her. “Wait, lay on our stomach, and hold your wrists out, I’ve got an idea,” I say picking up my dragging chains. She does as I say and I set my heel lightly on top of the manacle. I do a couple stomp practices, making sure I won’t hit Jen by accident, then I slam my heel down as hard as I can and hope I didn’t hurt Jen. Another cracking sound proves that I got the manacles off, and a smile from Jen proves I didn’t hit her.
“Hello! Another one over here,” Show calls. I turn to look at Show, who’s looking at us expectantly.
“Alright, chains tight,” I say. He stands up and braces his foot against the wall, while the other braces himself so he doesn’t go flying back like Jen did. I kick it twice and it disconnects. “Down on your stomach,” I say once he pulls the chains away. He follows suit, and in one good stomp, he’s outta his chains. “Dune, you’re gonna have to take mine off,” I say looking over to her.
She just looks nervously at me then says, “What if I hit you? I’m not sure I can even stomp that hard.”
“Don’t worry I’ll be fine, just line yourself up first and give it all ya got,” I say getting down to my knees then lying myself out on my stomach. “‘Sides, if you miss, you might get my band,” I say smiling up at her. That seems to give her confidence, as she walks over to me and lifts her heel up to line it up. She takes a while, but she’s just trying to make sure she won’t hit me, I don’t care if she does so long as she gets the manacles too. Finally she raises her heels as high as she can get it, and slams it down hard on the manacle. It leaves a mark, but doesn’t break it.
“You doing great Dune, a few more just like that,” I say to keep her spirits up, if she gives up, I’m stuck with these unless I can get Show to put my boots on and get it.
She nods her head and lets out a deep breath before she lifts her foot again, lining up much faster now, and coming down harder with her heel. They groan and crack open a bit, but another good hit is in order.
“That’s it Dune, one more good one,” I say smiling. She doesn’t even line up, she just goes up and comes down in one last fierce stomp. It cracks wide open and I lift my wrist out of them and pick myself up. I rub my wrist a bit…before my band goes off. Lucky me, I had my hand on that wrist when it went off, so now my hand burns. Why couldn’t I have Jen get that off too?
“Alright, now to figure out how we get out of here,” Show says rolling over to the door and examining it. He gives it a slight turn, locked—of course. “Well, maybe we could knock that out and push it open then make a run for the impound,” he says looking back to us.
I think it through some, we could do that, but risk running into Draculoids, and we’d be unarmed, but there was always this stupid one that thought it was funny to stop by every day and wave our confiscated items in our faces everyday…and he’d be showing up soon.
“Wait, that idiot that stops by everyday with our stuff, he’ll be coming around any minute, how ‘bout a little surprise party?” I say giving a wicked smile. Jen and Show share a look then turn back to face me.
“Sounds like a plan,” Show says crossing his arms, “So how do we plan to jump out?”
I walk up to the door and look at the area around it, then I take a closer look at the walls. There’re pipes all along them, even reaching up to the ceiling, almost like a ladder. I put my hand near it to see if it’s a heating pipe, but I don’t feel anything coming off it, so I put my hand on it and test to see if it’ll hold. Once I’m convinced it’ll hold my weight, I start to climb up to the top.
“Alright Dune, you and me are gonna hide up here, and jump on him when he walks in,” I say as I get closer to the ceiling, “Show, you hide behind the door and help us knock him out—maybe you can hit him on the head with your foot.”
“Wow, first time I heard that one,” Show says rolling over so that he’ll be behind the door when it opens. Jen starts to climb up with me, and as she does, I hear faint steps coming from outside.
“Hurry up, I think he’s coming!” I look down to Jen who’s just reaching the top of the wall. Show presses himself flat against the wall, while Jen and I hide ourselves in the shadows above the door, and we wait as the rattling informs us that someone’s about to enter.
I don’t mean to, but I hold my breath and actually pray that this plan doesn’t end with one of us getting hurt. The bar of light forms across the floor as the door is opened up, and a shadow comes rushing up into it when its owner realizes the occupants are gone.
“What the…?” we all hear the Drac and the sounds of something being pushed outta the way, must be the cart he uses to drag our stuff in. Just as he walks in the room, and I’m getting ready to jump, I start to get that tingly feeling in my wrist again…perfect timing for once.
I let go of the pipes and lunge for the Draculoid, and land right on his back, which sends him lurching forward and we end up on the ground. I quickly put my wrist against the side of his throat and the band goes off, just as it was supposed to. Good thing this was one of the higher frequencies, or else I don’t think the guy would have passed out like I hoped. After I’m sure he’s out, I roll off and sit still for a bit ‘til I feel that I can stand again. When I look up I see that Jen’s jumped down and is kneeling in front of me while Show’s checking the cart behind her.
“Everything there?” I mumble.
“Yeah, even the keys,” he responds tossing me the cat head keychain and the keys connected to it. I manage to snatch them in the air, then get myself up with some help from Jen.
“Let’s get outta here,” I say picking up my gun and switching the safety off. I look up to see Jen and Show picking up their own guns, and switching their safeties off too. Show goes over to see if the coast is clear, then waves us over to get us out.
“Wait!” Jen quips, I turn to see her heading back over to the Drac and start tying him up with the chains—hadn’t thought of that.
I walk over to help her, once we’ve got him tied tight, I rip off one of his coat sleeves and lift up the mask to gag him with it. I don’t take it off entirely…I just lift it up enough so I can gag his mouth with the sleeve. After that, I cover his face again, then I take his access card and keys, just in case we need them to get into anything, specifically the impound. Then I grab Jen by the arm and pull her to the door, the faster we get outta here, the less likely anyone will notice our escape before we’re outta the building.
Show’s keeping a look out in the hall, we join him and then we take off the way they brought us as quietly as we can. Unfortunately, the diamonds in me and Jen’s boots are clanking louder than stiletto heels, and Show’s skates aren’t exactly prowling-leopard-quiet either. But Show starts skating a little slower now, which makes him quieter, and Jen and I are taking to walking on our toes…takes us forever to get around, but then again we have no clue where we’re going, all these walls look the same with the posters of the Killjoys, all repeating in a pattern.
Something I’ve notice though, is that the MCR gang is at the end—or beginning, not sure—of the pattern. Guess it’s only sensible that they should be either of those points, being the major “bad” guys they are.
We’ve been snooping around for maybe twenty minutes now, and we still haven’t managed to find our way out of here. I think we might have to jump another Draculoid and force it to lead us outta hear. But just as I’m checking the next hallway around the corner, Jen decides to pipe up.
“Hey, look at this Specter,” I turn around and see Jen in front of a door a ways back. “It says, ‘Weapons Room’,” she says pointing at the sign on the door. I walk back over and see she’s right, it is a weapons room. I put my ear to the door to listen for anything, and I hear some movement. I start thinking that we might have to take out more than just one Draculoid on this one.
I put my finger to my lips and signal for them to get their guns ready, I take out the access card and press it against the scanner conveniently located right next to the door. There’s the lightest of clicks as the bolt unlocks, I reach out for the knob, then turn to see if Jen and Show are ready. They’ve come up and are directly behind me, ready to start firing the second I open the door. I nod to them, then face the door again, turning the knob as I take a deep breath.
