Chapter One: Alive and Kicking

Zena walked to third period like she did every other day. ‘Maths… Ew!!’ she thought to herself. As she made her way to class, she took a left turn into the girls’ restroom. She looked at her reflection with a self-conscious look in her brilliant green eyes; she never really liked how she looked, no matter how hard she tried to make herself look good.
There she stood, in front of the large, full-length mirror. She wore tight red skinny-leg jeans, a black and white studded belt, a black t-shirt that said “BOOM” in bold gold lettering, multiple coloured bracelets on both of her wrists and a pair of all-black converse.
Her hair was a rich shade of mahogany and it flowed in waves down passed her waist. She had been growing it since she was seven years old. Her skin was pale and her lips and cheeks were a warm rosy colour. Her brilliant green eyes were defined with black liquid liner that winged out the outer corners of her eyes (cat eyes) and thick, long lashes.
She sighed and ran her comb through her hair. It was windy out and the wind had messed up her hair. After she was done combing her hair, she walk out to see a group of so called ‘popular’ kids standing outside the restroom doors.
“Hey, Zena! Is that blood I see on your wrist?” a ‘popular’ girl called out. Zena flashed her a menacing look. She had not blood or cuts on her wrists. All the popular kids called her ‘emo’ because she chose to avoid everybody else. Couldn’t blame her for it either since every other student in her school was either an idiotic ‘popular’ kid or a really, really weird person. And Zena was neither of these so she tended to stay to herself and not worry about anyone else. Although she did have one friend, well, sort of. Zena always thought it was just out of sympathy that she became friends with her. Her name was Brie and she was good friends with the popular kids.
Zena walked off leaving the group of popular kids staring after her laughing. She shook off the situation and continued walking to her math classroom.
“Come in, Miss Williams. Please don’t be late again.” Said Ms Randy as Zena walked into the classroom and took her seat in the back corner.
Class droned on like usual, until, finally the bell rang for lunch time. Zena gathered her books and pencils and shoved them in her bag. She left the classroom and made her way to the cafeteria.
“Zena! Over here!” came the voice of Brie. She was a blonde-haired, brown-eyed girl wearing a pink mini dress and black ballet flats. Brie was patting the seat next to her for Zena to sit down.
Zena smiled and took her seat next to her.
“So how was third period?” asked Brie.
“Boring… What about you?” replied Zena.
“Well, I had P.E. It was quite fun actually… Oh, look! There’s Matt!!” said Brie excitedly, nudging Zena in the arm and pointing to the tall, tan-skinned, male brunette from across the cafeteria. Zena rolled her eyes. Matt was Brie’s crush, she liked him ever since middle school.
“Okay, okay Brie. I see him.” Said Zena, getting up to get her lunch. Brie followed her.
After they got their lunch from the crabby lunch lady, they returned to their seats and ate.
A few minutes silence passed.
“Oh! I forgot!! Danny’s having a party this Saturday at his place and I got invited. I can bring one friend to the party and I was wondering if you want to tag along?” asked Brie with a mouthful of her ham, cheese and tomato sandwich (samich LOL!! XD).
“Uhh… No, I don’t think I want to go.” Said Zena, picking at her sandwich. Danny was the most ‘popular’ kid in Trenton High School. And definitely not Zena’s friend, he had called her names and insulted her ever since they started middle school.
“Come on Zee! It will be fun! And besides, I’ll be there so no one will give you any trouble.” Said Brie giving Zena an encouraging smile. “Please come with me.”
“Okay, fine. I’ll come with you.” Said a hesitant Zena.
“Yay! Thanks Zee! You’re the best!!”
“Yeah…” Zena sighed. She didn’t really look forward to the party on Saturday, but she would go if her friend wanted her to go.
The bell rang for last period and the girls went to their last classes. Zena had English and Brie had Science.
“See you later Zee.” Said Brie waving to Zena.
“Yeah, see ya.” Zena waved back and they both went different ways.
Zena sat in her usual spot in the classroom, in the corner at the back, as to not be noticed by anyone. She sat and she daydreamed as the teacher spoke of something about onomatopoeia.
“Zena? ZENA!?” screamed the teacher.
“Uh. Yes, sir?” she said.
“I asked you what onomatopoeia is.”
“Umm… The sound of an object?”
“Close enough. Next time listen when I am explaining something to the class.”
“Okay…” Zena didn’t listen to the teacher and returned to her daydreaming until the final bell rang and all the students packed their belongings and left the classroom.
Zena caught the bus home like she did every day. People called out her name and shouted out insults.
“Where’s your friend now Zena? She leave you because you’re such an emo?” called one of the girls from the back seat.
Zena just shrugged her shoulders and sighed. She pulled out her iPod, put her headphones on and blasted her favourite songs, not caring if anyone called her name.
She finally got off the wretched bus and made her way down the street to her house. On her way home she saw a figure of a young man around her age. He had very short peroxide blonde hair, blazing hazel eyes and he was wearing an outfit that looked like it belonged in a marching parade. But it wasn’t the traditional red, it was black. She stared at him in wonder. ‘Nice outfit.’ She thought.
‘Why thank you…’ came a male voice inside her head.
‘Whoa! What the hell was that?!’ she thought.
‘Never mind, at least you’re alive and kicking. For now. Goodbye.’ The voice faded away and so did the figure of the boy.
Zena blinked, thinking that it was just hallucinating because of her fatigue. She hadn’t slept well for almost a week.
She walked in the front door of her house.
“Mom, I’m home!” she called out.
“Hi, honey! If you’re hungry, there are snacks in the pantry. I bought them today.” Her mother said to her as she hugged Zena. “How was your day?”
“It was okay…” Zena trailed off. Her mother looked at her, concerned.
“Are you sure? Did anything happen to you?”
“Just the usual name calling. It’s nothing really. I’m fine.” Zena gave her mom a half-hearted smile.
“Okay. I’ll speak to the principal about this bullying, again. They don’t seem to do anything-“
“Mom, its fine. You don’t need to call anyone about this. I’m sure they’ll stop if I learn not to show my feelings to them. Trust me.”
“But, Zena dear-“
“Its fine, mom. What did you do today?” said Zena, changing the subject.
“Oh, nothing really, just did some shopping. I bought you something. I think you might like it.” Said her mother.
“What is it?” said Zena as her was grabbing a granola bar from the pantry shelf.
“Come, I’ll show you.” Her mother mentioned for Zena to follow her. Zena followed her mother to her parent’s bedroom.
There, on the bed, sat a large box. Zena’s mother gestured for her to open it. Zena pulled the lid off the box to reveal a pair of awesome-looking shoes.
They were bright blue with black lining and studs along the back of the shoes. It had a black star on the side and it had white laces.
“Wow!” gasped Zena.
“I found them at the mall today and I instantly thought about you, so I bought them.” Said her mom.
“I love them! Thank you so much mom! I love you!” Zena hugged her mom and kissed her cheek.
“You’re welcome. I’m glad you like them so much.” Replied her mother.
“Hey, mom…”
“Yes, Zena?”
“Brie wants me to go to a party with her this Saturday. Can I go with her?”
“Sure you can.” Her mom smiled.
“Thanks!”
Zena left and walked up the stairs and to her room, where she place her new shoes in her closet and plonked down on her bed.
She thought about the man she saw on her way home this afternoon. Who was he? And why did he say ‘For now?’ She shook the thought off and went to turn her computer on.
She did her homework like usual, played her favourite game ‘The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay’ until her dad came home from work and dinner was ready.
“Zena! Dinner’s ready!!” her mother called from down stairs.
“I’m coming down in a minute!” Zena called back.
Zena paused the game and rushed down stairs to greet her father.
“Hey dad! How was work?”
“Hello, Zena! Work was busy, like always. How was school?” her father boomed.
“The usual.”
“I see. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m starving!” said Zena’s father rubbing this stomach.
They both sat at the table, the sun had almost set and Zena’s mother placed the big plate of roast lamb and baked potatoes on the table.
They ate in silence.
“Phew! I’m so full.” Said Zena, pushing her plate from her.
“Okay, Zena. Did you finish your homework?” asked her mom.
“Yeah, all done.”
“Good.”
“I’ll help you clean up, mom.”
After everyone had finished their dinner Zena and her mother cleared the table and washed the dishes. When that was finished, Zena went back up to her room and continued to play her favourite game until her alarm clock beeped, signalling the new hour. It was now 10 o’clock at night and Zena had to get some sleep if she needed to function properly tomorrow.
She changed into her nightgown, brushed her teeth and hair. She pulled back the covers on her bed and climbed in.
That night, when Zena finally fell asleep, she dreamt of that man she thought she saw that afternoon.
She dreamt that he took her hand and led her to some kind of parade. Then, the dream ended, and Zena slept through the rest of the night, dreamlessly.
