In the very back room we kept a lot of things. Extra guns, and some other odds and ends. Among it all there were several BL/ind citizen outfits. I’m not sure how they got them, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t want to know. I had a thought though.
“Here.” Party handed me a pile of cloths.
“Wait. Shouldn’t a couple of us stay here in case something happens?” I asked.
“We’re going to Battery City, we’re going to need as many people as we can get. Just in case of course. Plus, Dr. D will be here to hold down the fort.” He assured me.
I just shrugged and went to change into the clothes I was given.
After I had them on, I looked myself over in the mirror. A pair of white khaki pants, and a navy blue sweater made out of some weird fabric. It looked hideous, and I hated it. ‘This is normal?’ I thought to myself. I just shrugged and walked back out to where everyone was waiting, all in they’re equally ugly outfits.
“Looking good.” I joked.
“Right back at ya.” Fun chuckled back.
“I don’t like these. They’re loose and weird.” Flash complained.
“We all look weird.” Kobra pointed out to her.
“And you’re short, so they’re not going to fit you right.” Jet added.
“Let’s just do this.” Party said.
We all got into the Trans Am, and started towards Battery City. The whole ride Kobra was briefing us on how to act, how we were getting into the city, and that Flash and I should just be quiet. It all seemed pretty simple, but they still treated it like a legitimate mission.
When we closed in on Zone One and were really close to the city, Party parked the Trans Am behind a large boulder. From here we were hiking it.
It wasn’t long until we were in the city walking around just like the other citizens there. I had to try not to laugh at how everyone dressed. You could tell by the way they walked that they thought they were dressed like kings and queens.
“So, how do we buy the dog?” Flash Drive asked.
“I think the pet shop is just a few blocks from here. Just be quiet and follow me.” Party told her.
So, that’s what we did. We followed Party, and he was right. A couple blocks later we were at the pet shop.
Inside we were greeted by an overly cheerful salesman.
“Hello! Can I help you with something?” He asked, smiling.
“Yes. Do you sell dogs here?” Party asked him, completely normally.
“Of course. Right over here.” The man gestured to a corner of the shop where there were several puppies in a pen.
We walked over to look at all of them. I thought they were all too cute, but out of all of them one stuck out the most. He was small and had short black fur, and just looked absolutely adorable.
“I want that one.” Flash pointed out the same dog.
“Oh, it’s so cute!” Fun agreed with her.
“Remember, it has to be trained.” I reminded them.
“That little black one is the most obedient on we have in the store.” The salesman pitched in. I couldn’t be sure if he was being truthful or just trying to make a sale though.
“I think that settles it then. We’ll take that one.” Party pointed to the little black puppy.
“Okay, I’ll just need your individual IDs, and then you can pay.”
My thoughts flooded with horrible thought. We didn’t have ID numbers, they would know we were killjoys. Send us to the hell hole of BL/ind, and torture us, kill us, or worse. This was so not good.
The look on Flash’s face told me I was not the only one having these horrific thoughts.
The guys must have had a plan though, because soon enough Party spoke up.
“My ID is 81174.” He said.
“81175.” Kobra gave his.
“76944.” Jet went next.
“93559.” Fun did his last.
“Good. What about the children?”
‘Shit.’ I thought. I knew it was too good to be true that the guys got away with using those ID numbers. We were so screwed.
“Oh, they’re just our cousins. Visiting the city for a few days, you know? They don’t have Battery City ID’s.” Party tried. I could see it in his eyes, that he wasn’t expecting this.
It worked though. “Alright. That’ll be $100.” Party handed him the money. “Have a nice day.”
We got out of there as fast as we could without looking suspicious.
“Oh. My. God. I thought we were dead back there.” Flash sighed when we were a back from the pet store.
“That was close.” Party agreed.
“What are we going to name him?” She asked, holding our new dog in her arms.
“I’ve always liked the name Mo. What do you think about that?” I offered.
“I love it.”
Right as she said it a Drac came up from behind the corner we were passing. That look of fear I saw on her face back at the pet store returned.
“Did you watch the news last night?” Party asked out of nowhere.
“Yes, I did.” Kobra answered him.
They continued with more nonsense chatter until the Drac was long out of earshot.
“Why were you never actors?” I asked them.
They all just shrugged.
“I’m sorry.” Flash apologized. At first I wondered why, but then I thought that it was her that was talking when the Drac appeared. It still wasn’t completely her fault though. No one said anything though. We all just walked silently out of the city, and back to where we parked the Trans Am.
To be continued...
