held onto the feeling the entire ride. My ears even picked up on the sound of her breathing, it was just that deadly quiet in the car.
By the time we finally did get back to the diner I felt like someone could have died during that ride. The only thing keeping me sane was Flash Drive’s breathing. I gently shook her a little to try and wake her up. Her eyes slowly flicked open, and she gave a weak smile. I wanted to return it, but I couldn’t.
Jet Star helped Flash into the diner, and put her to bed in the room that was for my crew and I. I guess it’s just me and her now.
The realization of this hit me like a truck running me over. I had barely walked inside when I fell to me knees, crying.
Kobra Kid tried to comfort me, but like I always do, I brushed him off. I got myself off the ground and dragged myself into a booth where I curled up into a ball, and just continued to cry.
“That could have gone better.” Fun Ghoul said solemnly.
“Don’t even talk about it.” I managed to mumble loud enough so they could all hear.
That was it for the night then. All the guys went to their rooms, and slept. I just stayed where I was in the booth, and cried until the tears didn’t come anymore. At least until my body just fell from its last bit of energy, and I went to sleep myself.
It was late morning, when I finally woke up in the morning. I was in the bed of the guest room. I guess one of the guys must of found me sleeping in the booth, and moved me. Kind of weird, but okay.
I got up, and went out to the diner. All the guys were sitting in a booth, eating Power Pup. Even Flash Drive was up, and eating. I took a seat next to her, and she handed me a can of Power Pup. I opened it, and just mindlessly sat there eating it.
“So, I guess me and Flash Drive should get going then.” I said just loud enough so everyone could hear.
“What are you talking about?!” Jet Star exclaimed in shock that I would say something like that.
“Don’t you remember?” I questioned. “The deal was that after we got our revenge, my crew and I would leave. Since it’s only Flash and I left, it’s time for us to go.”
The emotions were painted clearly across all of their faces. None of them wanted us to go. Although Party Poison didn’t let it show for long before putting a hard look back on his face. Jet just looked to Party with a pleading look. I could practically hear him begging to let us stay.
Party finally relented. “You don’t have anywhere to go.” He pointed out. Hinting that we needed someplace to stay.
Jet picked up on this immediately. “They can stay here!”
At this point Party was just acting. I knew he was going to say that that could be done. “I suppose that wouldn’t be a problem. Provided they do their share of work.”
“I like that idea.” Flash Drive said timidly. “What do you think, Bomb?”
“I think,” I paused to add to the dramatic acting. “that would be nice.” I smiled.
Jet shouted in excitement, and threw his arms around Fun Ghoul. Fun was genuinely surprised by this gesture, but didn’t back away. The look on his face said that he couldn’t wait to be released though. I had to hold back a laugh.
After Jet had finally let go of him, Fun said, “He’s serious about the work though.”
“Oh please. I’ve probably done more work at my summer job than you guys ever did being in a band.” I teased.
Everyone just laughed. I could tell this was going to be the beginning of something special. I wasn’t sure if it would last, but I knew I would never forget these people.
“So, we’ll take patrols in an hour or so. Right now, let’s figure out where you two will sleep.” Party called things back to order.
“If it’s fine with you, Flash, we can just keep sharing that extra room. I don’t mind taking turns sleeping on the bed.”
“Works for me.” She smiled at me.
“Great.”
With that settled we all finished our breakfast, and just chilled a little before it was time for patrols.
“So, Fun and Jet will take south patrol, and Bomb and Flash will do north.” Party Poison told everyone.
“What about you and Kobra?” Flash asked earnestly.
“We’re going to hold down the fort.” He smiled sheepishly.
I knew that was total bull shit, but just sighed and went with it.
Flash Drive, and I took off out the Diner in the opposite direction of Fun Ghoul and Jet Star as Party Poison and Kobra Kid just waved at us from inside.
We walked away from them without saying anything to one another. It wasn’t until we were well out of earshot that I finally said anything.
“Can we just act like yesterday never happened?” I blurted out into the silence. I couldn’t keep the question in any longer. I needed an answer.
“Sorry, but we’ve got to remember. That’s something that’s never going to change, so might as well get used to it. I don’t know what you mean by ‘yesterday’, though? I was there for weeks at the least.” She responded.
“Oh my God. What did they do to you? It was just one day. One very horrible day.” I slowed down to turn and look her in the eyes.
“It felt like years.”
I took my eyes off her to look in front of us considering we were on patrol. Good thing too.
Up ahead there was a BL/ind van pulled off to the side of the road.
To be continued...
Enjoy!
