I slammed to the floor, gasping at the sharp, agonizing pain in my left calf. I heard Gerard let out a muffled groan as he slammed down next to me, falling straight off the bench. The doors had been forced open by the blow, and as the van was still violently moving I felt myself slide down the floor towards them. My feet were dangling off the edge, but I was more worried that they would crash into us again, meaning me and Gerard would both die.
He suddenly grasped my arm and pulled me up inside the van, his other hand clinging to the bench. "Hold on! We're almost there!". The van was still rocking, making me want to puke.
I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for something to happen. Either death, or something down the road from it. Neither sounded too great.
There was a large clang, informing me the gates were now closed.
Weather we were inside them or not, I wasn't sure.
We kept driving anyway, I couldn't tell where. One of Gerards arms was wrapped firmly around my waist meaning I couldn't fall out of the van, even though the doors were still open, letting the cold air in.
I heard Tom shouting something I couldn't understand, and suddenly everything stopped. The only thing that told me I wasn't dead was the wind, that tickled my face and made my hair ripple. I opened my eyes.
"Phew, that was close." Gerard said.
"Did we make it?" I asked, forgetting everything else for a second.
"Yeah. We're in the camp. The gates closed before they could get in." He must've been able to see, or at least not shut his eyes. He stood up, and offered me a hand.
I took it and tried to get up, but my knees buckled; I became aware of the blinding pain in my calf again. I gasped in agony and was back on the floor, with Gee's startled face over mine.
Everything was blury, but I could make his voice out calling to the others. "Guys! Guys! Ali's been hurt!"
I heard them coming over, then all of their faces were looking down into mine. Too many faces; everyone had at least three.
"Go get some help!" Gerard said, and I heard Frank shouting out to someone. "Ali, you're gonna be fine, just hold on." Gee smiled, what looked like reassuringly. I groaned some kind of reply, they were all spining now.
I felt a bunch of hands lift me up, carrying me somewhere. I ducked in and out of conciousness.....First I was outside, then I was in a room with a tall ceiling......then I was in a bed....
Then I properly fell asleep, and the nightmares came again, all revolving around the same topic.
Vampires. They were blood spattered......
I woke up drenched with sweat, to see Ray and Gee's faces looking into mine.
"Hey, Ali. You feeling any better?" Gerard asked. I nodded as an instinct, but then stopped, as it made my head hurt. I groaned; I felt as though I'd been microwaved.
Ray laughed, before saying "You scared us quite a bit."
"What happened?" i croaked; my throat felt dry. I spotted a glass of water on the table next to my bed, and started drinking it, whilst Gee explained.
"Um, you broke your leg. Twice. You've been out for a week." I almost spat out my water.
"A week?" I repeated in disbelief.
"Yup." Ray stated, "And Gee hasn't been away from your side, for the whole time." Gerard shoved him playfully, looking embarassed. I had to admit I was blushing slightly.
I needed air desperatley, I wanted to go outside. "Can you guys help me up? I really need some air." I tried to get out of the bed, but stumbled, feeling dizzy. Again, Gerard caught me.
"I don't think thats a good idea......" he hesitated.
"Please? I just need to breathe for a sec." Then with their support I hobbled outside.
It was like a refugee camp, but is one of the most populated places I'd seen in months. It had a fire place in the centre, with a bunch of buildings surrounding it. Washing lines full of clothes hung from building to building. The children were all playing, as if there was nothing wrong at all. Sadly I realised this was the world they'd been born into; they didn't know any better. Adults wandered round with hard looks on their faces, doing the things that needed to be done. But these people had hope in their eyes; something that was so rare where I came from.
"Ali, welcome to Wilderness camp 223. We don't know where we go from here." Gerard sounded almost defeated, tired.
But not yet.
"And the vampires?" I asked.
"They're camping around the fences. Defences here aren't the best. We're preparing for an ambush."
