I Live for Today, Not Tomorrow (part 46)

Frank's P.O.V:
I was wondering why Gerard was taking so long. I walked down the white hallway with my hands in my pockets. I could tell I wasn't getting anywhere near close to 16c. I was lost. I looked for someone to ask for directions, but all the hallways were empty. It was like a ghost town in this hospital. Suddenly, from around the corner, I could see a woman walking towards me. She wore a white lab coat, so she must of worked here. The woman had long, shiny blond hair, that blew behind her as she walked. She wore glasses, but her amazing green eyes shone through. I ran up to her. “Uh, hi, my name's Frank.” I stuttered. I awkwardly stuck my hand out. “Hello Frank.” She smiled as she shook my hand in return. “How can I help you?” She asked. “I'm lost...” I shyly said. The woman laughed. “Well, what room are you looking for?” “16c.” I blurted out. “Excuse me?” “16c.” I repeated. The woman gave me a questioning glance.“Are you related to Josephine Erikson?” She slowly asked. “No, but my friend is her-- used to be her boyfriend.” I corrected. “Where's your friend now?” She asked, raising a brow. “16c.” The woman swore under her breath. “Follow me.” She commanded as she began to jog down the empty hallway. I trailed behind her. “What's wrong??” I asked with confusion. The woman stopped dead in her tracks, and looked me deep in the eye. “Josephine Erikson died while giving birth.” She let down. I couldn't speak, I just nodded. The thought of Josie being dead just didn't process in my mind. The woman led me to 16c, where we found Gerard sitting on the floor, outside of the tall, black door. As soon as he heard us, he looked up. The woman stepped forward, put I pulled her back. “Let me.” I said. She nodded. “Hey Gee, is Josie in there?” I carefully asked. “Yes she is.” He replied. “Can we go into the room?” Gerard furiously shook his head. “She doesn't want to talk at the moment.” He said with tears forming in his eyes. “Why not?” Gerard placed his finger to his lip. “Shhhh, she's sleeping.” He whispered. I looked back at the woman. She blankly stared at the floor, shaking her head. I looked back at Gerard. “Can you please let us into the room?” I asked. “No.” He refused. I walked over to Gerard, and put my lips to his ear. “Gee, if you let us see Josie, we can help you.” I persuaded. He thought for a moment, then gently nodded and scooted away from the door. I turned the knob, and motioned the woman to come follow me, but Gerard ran into the room before we could. He stood beside Josie's corpse, and tightly held her hand. He whispered things into her ear, but I couldn't make out the words. The woman stepped in front of me, and placed her hand on Gerard's shoulder. He swiftly turned around and stared at the woman, warning her not to come any closer with his eyes. She backed away, giving him the space he needed. “Tell me something.” Gerard weakly said. “Anything.” “What happened?” He pleaded. The woman took off her glasses, and wiped them on her lab coat. Still looking at the floor, she answered. “Josephine Erikson died because of excessive bleeding while giving birth.” The woman slowly said. Gerard faintly nodded. The sound of the door opening broke the painful silence. “Dr. Reed!” A nurse called out. “Just a minute.” The woman, who I was guessing was Dr. Reed said. She stepped out of the room, leaving me alone with Gerard, and his shattered heart. I walked over to Gerard, who was still holding Josie's hand. “We're getting married tomorrow.” He announced as he held up Josie's left hand. “That's wonderful Gee.” I painfully smiled. Dr. Reed walked back into the room, rubbing her temple with her fingers. “Um, I have some news.” She trailed.
