The last time a posted a part of my story was early June so I figured it was time to put everything else aside for a little bit and get Part 13 ready for posting. Sorry it's so late. I haven't abandoned it, I promise! So, without further ado (there's been too much already), here is Frenemy Part 13!
Enjoy! Redhead out. Peace.
PART THIRTEEN
Everything was going well. I had almost become a parrt of the gang. It was odd. Being in the desert, living their life-it all felt oddly familiar. Natural, something I didn't understand. Until everything went wrong. Why does everything always end up going wrong?
The morning started off typical enough. I got up and stepped outside, watching Comet speed off in the direction of another killjoy camp. Puzzle was barricaded in one of the sheds fiddling with some computer and radio equipment. Danzing was gone, on my bike I might add, the tire tracks leading out into the desert. I wandered down to the shed and peeked in on Puzzle. He smiled triumphantly, testing a repaired walkie-talkie he'd been struggling to make work for a while now.
"Danzing Moon? Can you hear me? Danzing?" he said into the mouthpiece.
"What do you want, loser?" she snapped over the crakling line.
"I did it! The walkie-talkies work. We can stay in contact wherever we go now."
"Wonderful, genius. Now do me a favor and bring me some gas.My bike died."
"Fine. Coming."
Puzzle set down the handheld and stood, running a hand through his hair.
"She means MY bike, right?"
He turned, jumping, startled by my voice.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you."
"No biggie. Wanna ride out with me to rescue Danzing?"
I shrugged. "I would but Danzing took my bike."
Puzzle frowned, gazing around the shed. "Take hers. I finished the repairs on it after she left. If she throws a fit, I'll take the punches."
I bit my lip, hesitating. Danzing really did not like me. She kept acting as if I was going to betray them, run back to Battery City, and bring an army of Dracs down upon them ~insert evil laughter here~.
"Are you sure?"
"You hang around here all day even though you've made it obvious you're not in any hurry to head back to BLI. Take her bike and she can ride it back. Let's go."
He tossed me the keys and I followed him out into the desert. Danzing waited in the middle of nowhere, leaning against my bike with a bandana covering her nose and mouth. As soon as she realized I was on her motorcycle, she flew into a fury, ripping the bandana from her fae and storming toward us, her fingers dancing near the handle of her gun.
"What the hell do you think you're doing on my bike?! Puzzle. Really? Why is this Thing driving my cycle?"
"Just a friendly reminder, my name's Jinx, not 'thing'," I snapped.
Danzing responded with a flash of her middle finger. "Puzzle, where is your head? She's the enemy. Why can't you and Comet seem to understand that?"
"Danzing, you're overreacting. Jinx has done nothing to hurt any of us. I don't think you're being fair. Here, fill your tank so we can head back. I don't like being exposed like this."
She snatched the red container from him and turned to fill the tank. Finished, she motioned for me to get off her ride and I gladly did, hurrying to get on mine. We headed back to the hideout, Danzing riding along behing me. I rolled my eyes. She was way too paranoid.
The closer we came to the concession stand, the more it became clear something was wrong. The zinging sounds of laser beams firing thorugh the aor soon became audible and the three of us shared uncertain looks, pressing harder on the accelerator. My heart pounded. Did a Drac find the concession stand? It was so far from the entrance to Zone 5. Was Comet there? He had to be, why else would there be shots fired? The closer we got, the clearer the laser shots were, darting back and forth in quick succession. I pushed my bike, Danzing surging past me and Puzzle. I overtook Puzzle for a minute then slowed, realizing I had no weapon. I wanted to stop Puzzle and Danzing, tell them to hang back, but what difference would it make? They had to protect what they had, a feeling that urged me toward danger, too. Nothing I said would change their minds. I sped, overtaking Puzzle again.
I reached the top of the hill and looked over the scene. Comet and two Dracs stood in the open space between the concession stand and the ticket booth exchanging shots. Out of habit I reached for my gun only to have my fingers close around dry air. I cursed, watching Danzing sped closer. She fired at the Dracs, each stopping long enough to dodge the shots from both her and Comet. She passed and as she prepared to fishtail around for another pass, she was hit in the back. She fell, hitting the ground and tumbling away. Comet turned at the crashing of her bike and a laser beam struck him in the heart. Only me and Puzzle were left.
I heard Puzzle coming closer, the sound of his engine mingling with my strangled "NO!". I turned to warn him, at least give him a chance to save himself, but I was too laate. I watched the beam pass in the corner of my eye, saw Puzzle's determined expression change to sudden surprise seconds before he was hit. He fell from his motorcycle, the bike ontinuing on for a few feet before falling also.
I watched it all hapen as if in slow motion. I turned toward the Dracs, positive they were going to kill me next. I didn't have any idication I was a Drac on me. My once white uniform was now stained from the desert and I didn't have my mask or my gun. Unless they were from my team, they probably wouldn't even know who I was.
I waited for the shot. There was no way to react, nothing to use to defend myself. At least I wasn't killed by Korse's ambition. At least I knew, finally understood, there was something else besides the life BLI presribed for us. In a sense, I knew I would die free. I approached slowly, waiting for the shot, and trying not to look at the bodies of the Killjoys I had come to think of as friends.
I'll try to get Part 14 out sooner. Sorry 13 was so late. Until the next part, peace.
