The next day, I borrowed someone's car and made my way over to the Run, this huge black market on the west side of Zone 6. I'd lost my dagger in the rescue mission and I wanted a new weapon. When I got there, I headed straight for all the weaponry, when something caught my eye: a gorgeous ebony bow, carved intracitley in the shape of angel wings. An elderly, kind looking man was sitting behind the table the bow was on. "Hi! How much for this?" I asked, gently picking up the bow. It was light, perfectly balanced in my hands. It felt like it was made for me.
"What do you have?" He asked.
"I don't have very much..." I said, reaching into my bag. I rooted around a bit, but there wasn't anything I could give him in exchange for something so gorgeous. When I looked back up at him, he was holding the bow out to me.
"For you, no charge. You seem like a nice young lady and you're strong, I can tell. Special deal, today only." He said with a smile. I smiled back at him and took the bow.
"Thank you so much!" I said elated. He handed me the quiver of arrows and I left, feeling genuinley happy for the first time since the mission. I hung around the Run for a few more hours and picked up a few other things I needed: some red hair dye, a white leather jacket, a new pair of half black- half white jeans and a pair of red Converse high tops. My favorite purchase of the day was the bow and arrows. It was something different; most Killjoys only used ray guns, but I was an old- school kind of girl. On my way back to the warehouse, I tried to think of a real Killjoy name for myself. I wanted it to be a kickass name, something no one else would think of. I flipped on the radio, hoping inspiration would strike me. When I turned on the staticy radio, "Check Yes Juliet" by We The Kings came on. I smiled. I loved the play Romeo and Juliet. The only thing I didn't like was how they were practically fighting each other at the end, even though they said they loved each other more than their own lives. That's when it came to me: RomeoVersusJuliet. It was PERFECT! I couldn't wait to tell Frank.
A few hours later, I was a totally new person. I'd cut the right leg, the white side, off the jeans to show off my super cool ink and my scar going down my leg, and the red hair dye looked amazing in my naturally dark brown hair. It wasn't a fire truck red, but more of a burgundy red. I embroidered 'RomeoVersusJuliet' in black script on the back of the jacket in huge letters and on the front left side right over my heart, I embroidered 'RVSJ' in black script. Going down one arm I wrote "Romeo, O Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name," and on the other arm I wrote "But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun," two of the most iconic lines from the play. I looked, and felt, like a total rockstar. The whole red, black and white look was working for me. I struted out of my room to go and find Frank, but he was nowhere in the whole warehouse.
While I waited for him, I decided to break in my new bow. I set up a target practice dummy outside and fired a few test shots. This gorgeous weapon was what I'd been looking for my whole life. It was perfect. The only thing it was missing was a name. I thought for a moment, then I decided to name it Barnabas. Seemed like a fitting name for it.
Frank never showed up that day. Or the day after that. In fact, he didn't show up for about three weeks. I didn't worry about him though. I kept myself occupied by hunting all the time. I didn't bring Barnabas with me though. I much prefered to use my own strength to take down a kill than a weapon.
One of the days I went hunting, it was dark and rainy, about a month after my makeover, one fo the rare occasions I decided to bring Barnabas with me. I was out alone, drinking in the rain and the quiet. I silently lept out of a tree to chase a deer. When I landed on the ground, I was greeted by a pair of legs in front of me. I looked up to see Korse standing in front of me, flanked by two BLI agents. He grinned devilishly down at me.
"Just come quietly and we won't be as harsh." He said. I backed up. "Oh, come now, child, don't be DIFFICULT!" He screamed as he fired a shot into my stomach. Luckily I didn't have my jacket on, just my red ribbed tank top. I screamed in pain and fell to my knees. Korse chuckled a little. "Take the weapon from her and cuff her." I shook my head.
"PLEASE DON'T!! Just take the arrows, but let me keep the bow. Please? What am I gonna do with just a bow?" I pleaded as an agent handcuffed my wrists together in front of me. Korse thought for a moment, then consented. I gripped the bow so hard my knuckles turned white. I wasn't letting this thing go. I pondered trying to get back to the warehouse, but Korse seemed to read my mind.
"Don't even bother. All your friends were either killed or taken into custody. But, we've got something special planned for you my dear vampire."
