I laughed bitterly over my shoulder at him. I was sitting side-on to make room, which was a tad annoying, but I wasn’t complaining. He chuckled and patted my shoulder, which I think was wedged in front of his face.
Suddenly, the engine roared to life and we shot forward. There was a sense of urgency in the more-so-than-usual erratic way Poison was driving, but by the smirk I could see in the rear view mirror that kept dancing across his face, I guessed it was excitement.
I glanced to my left. Blue’s head kept tipping back and her eyes were slowly slipping closed, then flying open as we went over bumps or Poison changed gears. Crys was already out cold, her head resting against Blue’s side. I stifled a yawn and tried to turn to Kobra.
“How far is it… wait, where are we going?” I asked drowsily. I squinted at the window to try and focus on something to keep me from passing out, but it was just sand and shrubs illuminated by the almost-full moon, nothing spectacular to grab my attention. Besides, there was no way to tell where we were just by looking at the surrounds, especially in the dark. Kobra cleared his throat.
“We’re at D’s at the moment. You’ll be pleased to know that Grace managed to grab some of your clothes we had with us during the raid,” he said brightly. I laughed quietly, and I could see Ray smiling in the front at me as he turned over his shoulder. Kobra continued. “We’re about a Zone and a half away,” he yawned, stretching his hand across the back of the seat. “You should sleep if you can.”
I needed no more encouragement. I noticed how heavy my eyelids felt and how much my body ached, so I shuffled in my place, closed my eyes and let the comforting sound of the car’s engine lull me to sleep.
