Chapter 4
As Skate lay down to sleep, Static watched as everyone else did the same. Party was the only one who stayed up besides him.
"Static, go to sleep," Party said.
"I'm not tired. Plus, I kinda need to refresh my brain and think a little," Static replied.
There was silence for a few moments, then Party said, "What's been on you're mind lately?"
"Not much. Just that we have another person to try and protect. I'm not objecting to it or anything, Skate's great, and she's an awesome fighter, but its just hard to have another person to worry about."
"You worry about us?"
"Well, yeah. You're the only family I have left. I know this sounds weird, but I do care about everyone. Like in a brotherly way. But with Skate, I dunno. Its just . . . different, y'know?"
"Yeah. I get the feeling." Party looked like he was lost in his train of thought.
"You okay, Party?"
"What? Oh, yeah. Just thinking."
"About what?"
"Things before the explosion."
"Oh." Static decided not to say more than that, because he knew that life before the explosion was a touchy subject. He can tell me if he wants, Static thought.
"I have a wife. And a little girl."
"Really?"
Party smiled. "Yeah. My wife is named Lindsey, and my daughter's name is Bandit."
"Cool. I like the name Bandit." Static smiled.
"Yeah. You're probably wondering why I'm talking as if they are still alive. I think -- hope -- that they are alive and healthy in Battery City. Even though that they're under control of the Dracs, they are still safe. I like to think that. Did you ever have a girlfriend or something?"
"I did, but she was a bitch. I was in the phase of wanting to have a girlfriend, not caring what her personality was, just that she was hot. But that completely changed. I broke up with her, and about a week later, the explosions happened."
"Wow. Do you think you're ever gonna be in a relationship again?"
"I hope. But this time I'm gonna actually care about their personality, not how cute they are. I don't even care about that anymore."
"Good. I'm glad you changed that."
"Me too." They sat in silence.
Static looked down at Skate, who was lying next to him. She looked so peaceful. Her ray gun was in her hand, her bandana around her neck.
"She'd be good for you, y'know," Party said, jerking Static out of his thoughts.
"What?" Static replied.
"I said she'd be good for you. Skate."
"Oh. Well I barely know her."
"I know. But in the future."
"Maybe. I just have to figure out what kind of person she is."
"Alright, alright. Just saying. You should get some sleep."
"Honestly, I got a lot of sleep. On my standards, anyway. I'm not tired, seriously. I'll take watch."
"You sure?"
"Positive."
"Okay . . . wake me up if something happens, though."
"Alright. Now sleep."
Party smiled and rolled his eyes. He lay down, and Static took watch.
* * * * * * *
Skate woke up to the sun high and shinning in her face. She sat up, and found that Static was awake.
"Hey," she said.
"Hey, Skate. You're up early," Static replied.
"Not really. Normally I wake up earlier than this, so it's not early for me at all."
Oh. Okay. So . . . did you sleep well?"
"Sorta. I kept waking up, then falling back to sleep again. How was yours?"
"I didn't sleep."
"You didn't? Why?"
"I kept watch."
"They made you do that?"
"No. Party was gonna do it, but I could see that he was tired, so I took watch on my own accord."
"Oh. So were there any intruders last night?" Skate asked with a smile.
"Nope. If there were, we wouldn't be here right now. Or at least I wouldn't."
"True. So did you stay up the whole night? Or morning, I should say."
"Yeah. I just needed time to think."
"Oh."
"I was just thinking about how it was before the explosions."
"I think about that a lot. Like where we would be now if they never happened."
"Yeah. I probably would have finished high school, gone to college, gotten married, and had kids."
"Same. Wait, finished high school? How old are you, Static?"
"Not that old. Only eighteen."
"Oh, wow. Me too."
"Really? Cool."
"S o do you know how old the other guys are?"
"Yup. Party, Jet, and Imploder are each 25, and Kobra is 24."
"Wow. All in the same age group."
"Yeah." Silence.
"So are you a sarcastic person?" Static asked.
"No, not at all," Skate said, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Alright then," Static said, smiling.
The rest of the guys got up about twenty minutes later. They got in the cars once they were ready, looking for a place to stay. They came across an abandoned diner, pulled up to it, and got out of the cars. They walked in, guns ready. Everything seemed to be okay, but it was a bit too quiet. Then a guy jumped out from behind a cabinet, grabbed Skate by the neck, and held his gun to her head.
