Chapter 3

Skate woke up to someone shaking her.
"C'mon Skate. We gotta go," said Static.
"Wh-what? It's the middle of the night!" Skate complained.
"I know. But the Dracs are about a mile down the road. We have to get out and move to a new zone."
"Okay." Skate got up and realized she was still fully dressed. At least I don't have to waste my time getting my clothes on, she thought. She grabbed her gun, put on her sunglasses, and tied her bandana around her mouth.
There was little light outside, for the sun had only just begun to rise.
Static lead her to one of the cars and had her get in it. Kobra was driving, and Jet was in the passenger seat. Skate got in the back. Party, Imploder, and Static got into the other car.
They got on the road and drove. They didn't know where they were going, just that they had to get out of Zone 8.
About an hour of driving later, they came across a sign that said Zone 6 on it. They got off the road and drove through Zone 6.
After making sure that it was safe, they parked the cars and got out.
Zone 6 was basically a flat desert plain with some plants and some very large boulders scattered around. There were a few hills, but other than that, it was just desert land with some cliffs.
They set up a fire and sat around it. It was silent, except for the quiet crackling of the fire.
Party broke the silence. "Skate, just so you know, we might have to do that every few days or so. If we're lucky, maybe about once every week."
"The Dracs hunt us down that fast?" Skate replied.
"Yeah. Whenever we kill some of them or at least injure, they somehow get it back to BL/Ind. where they were hurt or killed. Then they come out and search the zones nearby, so we have to run. Tomorrow, we are gonna see if there are any places we can stay in, like a house or diner or something."
"Wow, that really sucks. The part about us having to be on the run, I mean. I'm gonna be on my toes pretty much as long as I'm alive."
"No. Not neccissarily. If we kill off all the Dracs, which we would need some help with, then we wouldn't have to be forced to be citizens of Battery City," Kobra said.
"Battery City?"
"Oh, yeah. Battery City is the place that the Dracs have all control over. They tried to make us citizens, but it didn't work, so they switched to trying to kill us."
"Damn. They're trying to kill you just 'cause you won't be their citizens?"
"Pretty much."
"Harsh." Silence.
"Excuse me for a sec," Static said. He got up and walked over to the cars and stopped, gazing at the rising sun. Skate walked over and stood next to him. There was silence for a few seconds, then Static said, "Have you ever thought that this could be your last day of living? Or at least seeing daylight?"
"Yeah, I've thought about it a lot, what with the Dracs trying to kill us and all," Skate replied.
"Yeah. What would you do if you knew that you only had a day left to live?"
"I would make it count."
"Like you would do all the things you've ever wanted to do or something?"
"No. I would spend those last hours with my family, the people closest to me."
"Who are the people closest to you now?"
"Well, since none of my real family's alive, probably you guys."
"Oh."
"You seem surprised. Why?"
"'Cause I thought you would say that you had no one close to you now."
"Well, you guys are the closest people to me now. It's either you, the Dracs, or the citizens of Battery City. One, the Dracs are trying to kill us, so how would they be even the tiniest bit close to me? Two, I don't even know the people of Battery City. Three, I've spent the most time with you guys since the explosions."
"Wow. Deep."
"I know right?" Skate laughed.
Silence. They quietly walked back over to the other guys.
"We should try and get some sleep. I'll keep the first watch," Party said.
"You sure? I'm not that tired, I could take the first watch if you want," Skate offered. The truth was that she really was tired.
"Yeah, I'm sure. You get some sleep."
"Alright." Skate was silently grateful for that. She lay down by the fire, and even though it was early morning, fell asleep.
